London Bach Society has supported its orchestra since 1968 and the 40th anniversary of Steinitz Bach Players is celebrated at the LBS 18th Bachfest, which begins at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall on Sunday 2 November at 7.30pm in a magnificent programme of Bach’s Weimar cantatas directed by Anthony Robson entitled “JSB at Heaven’s Castle” with soloists Gillian Keith, Michael Chance, Nathan Vale and Peter Harvey.

Although an impossible task, this beautifully presented disc attempts to survey the music of the 15th-century court of the Dukes of Savoy, who were lavish patrons of the arts, especially music. Duke Amadeus VIII is remembered for his election as the antipope Felix V in 1439, but he also brought Guillaume Dufay to Savoy. Dufay’s Par le regard de vos beaux yeux is performed, as are several works in the programme, by the excellent countertenor Christophe Carré, and gothic harpist, Marie Bournisien.

The city of Elche will play host to the 13th Festival Medieval d´Elx from 24 October to 2 November, which focusing on women during the Middle Ages this years coincides with the extraordinary performance of the Misteri d´Elx (Elx Mystery Play), part of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity since the year 2001 and staged on 1 November every even year.

Ex Cathedra’s 2008/09 season gets underway this month. It launches with the first complete recreation of the original 1846 version of Mendelssohn’s Elijah in collaboration with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at Birmingham’s Town Hall. The season also offers: Lassus’ St Matthew Passion as a context for Ex Cathedra’s performance of Bach’s setting on Good Friday at Symphony Hall; a programme of Monteverdi’s madrigals alongside the Coppini sacred contrafacta; and a midsummer celebration of Handel and Purcell.
