10 CDS FOR A DESERT ISLAND: KATARINA LIVLJANIC
Katarina Livljanic
Singer and musicologist, founder and director of the vocal ensemble Dialogos. Born on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, she decided to become a medieval music performer at a very early age, training at the Zagreb Music Conservatory before moving to France where she studied singing with Guillemette Laurens and musicology with Marie Noël Colette. Her current projects with Dialogos focus on medieval repertoire (9th– 12th c.), plainchant from Southern Europe and liturgical theatre. Among the theatrical programmes, there is a Glagolitic “Tondal’s Vision”, which was awarded the Coup de cœur 2005 by the Académie Charles Cros. New programmes include “Chant Wars” (a co-production with the ensemble Sequentia) centered on Carolingian chant and local traditions in Europe in the 9th and 10th centuries, “Abbo Abbas…” (focused on 11th-century polyphony). Livljanic is currently preparing a musical monodrama “The Agony of Judith”, a staged production of the poetic masterpiece from medieval Dalmatia.

In addition, Katarina Livljanic obtained a Ph.D. at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, based on research of medieval chant manuscripts of Southern Italy. She currently teaches at the Sorbonne in Paris, where she is directing a new Masters degree in medieval music interpretation. Livljanic was a visiting artist and lecturer at Harvard University, and is a founder of a chant performance programme at the University of Limerick in Ireland.
