From time immemorial, each generation has argued with its predecessor. It’s only human. Early music is no exception. Whether this disagreement is well-founded or is simply a knee-jerk reaction inherent to being human depends to a large extent on the basis of the criticism and specific artistic weight of those voicing it.

At age 35, Vittorio Ghielmi has lived a life that allows him to reflect on the instrumental aspect of early music in particular and on music as a phenomenon in general, observing his surroundings with an eye that is at once young and experienced. And above all, Ghielmi seems to have asked himself some time ago what means of expression are necessary today for this search to make sense and continue to communicate a message of renewal.

In his solo recordings playing the viola da gamba, as a guest musician performing with the pianist Uri Caine or in his work with the jazz trumpet player Kenny Wheeler, Ghielmi has produced music that explores new sounds, relying on a solid musical background and a vivid imagination.

His experiments with Luca Pianca or as leader of the Quartetto Italiano di Viole da Gamba (now Il Suonar Parlante) give him the authority to back up his opinions.

Besides the awards he has received, his method of teaching viola da gamba and his teaching chairs in Brescia and Lugano (in the Italian part of Switzerland) are examples of how the academic community has acknowledged his excellence and – even more importantly – has allowed him to found a school. This permits him to continue his quest with absolute freedom.
