Víctor Torres says he sings Monteverdi’s Orpheus “like Mercedes Sosa would sing it.” His linking of the popular Argentine singer with a repertoire that is neither grassroots nor Argentine seems to merge with a hypothesis that he actually attributes to a fellow Argentine, the director Gabriel Garrido. The French magazines Diapason and Le Monde de la Musique say the baritone Torres – under the direction of Garrido– turned in one of the best performances of Orpheus in the work’s history (some go so far as to say it was without a doubt the best, or at least the most human and dramatic of all). Along with Graciela Oddone, Rosa Domínguez, Bernarda Fink and María Cristina Kiehr, Torres is one of those artists from the other side of the Atlantic who are constantly sought out by major European directors who specialize in baroque and late Renaissance music.
