His talent brought him swiftly to the fore within important early music groups such as the Ricercar Consort, La Simphonie du Marais, Le Concert des Nations, A Sei Voci, La Grande Ecurie and the Chambre du Roy. However it was not long before his urge to explore music in more depth and his passion for the early Baroque spurred him to found his own ensemble. From the outset two discs from Alpha, recorded in conjunction with the mezzo-soprano Guillemette Laurens, propelled Le Poème Harmonique to the forefront. The first disc, devoted to Bellerofonte Castaldi, marked Le Poème Harmonique out as one of the most interesting ensembles of recent years. Revue Diapason named Dumestre ‘Jeune Talent de l’Année’ in 1999. The second CD, this time featuring the music of Domenico Belli, also won a number of awards from the specialist press. Since then, a series of recordings, also on the French label Alpha, have reinforced the distinguished position of Le Poème Harmonique in the early music world.
