This is a three-part interview. Our first meeting took place in June 2001, the day after the Huelgas Ensemble had given a concert in Nyon, Switzerland as part of the Festival de Musique du Haut-Jura. The programme was entirely made up of works by Jean Richafort, which explains Paul Van Nevel’s frequent references to a composer who is relatively unknown even to specialist audiences. In late August of the same year we met in the Burgundian town of Tharoiseau, following the opening concert of the Rencontres Musicales de Vezelay, in which Van Nevel performed works by another little-known composer, Cipriano de Rore. Our final encounter took place in Lille in April 2002, as another new season was beginning.
