Fabio Biondi is a many-sided man. A brilliant musician, he conducts Europa Galante, the ensemble he founded twelve years ago, from the concert master’s chair. An indefatigable researcher, he seeks out forgotten composers and scores hidden away in libraries. His inspiration and spirit have made major contributions to the renaissance of Italian baroque music. Biondi’s revelatory performances of his preferred repertoire, which he bases on re-readings of original manuscripts, magnify the beauty of instrumental works, the sensuality of arias, and the profound melancholy of cantatas and oratorios. His goal is to explore each genre’s special language and to bring out details, provide ornamentation, and contribute to the flexibility of the vocal line. His highly personal and invention-filled interpretations invite us to join him as he explores their secrets. Biondi’s discography is considerable. The numerous recordings he has made for Opus 111 enhance the rediscovery of the musical heritage of the Italian baroque. Today he records exclusively for Virgin Classics. His recordings include works of Bach, Boccherini, Caldara and—in particular—Scarlatti and Vivaldi. His most recent release is a disc of Vivaldi’s Concerti per mandolini. In January 2003 a new recording of The Four Seasons will be released to coincide with the Folle Journée in Nantes. In April a disc of Italian Sonatas will come out, and the autumn will see Boccherini’s Guitar quartet and quintets on record shop shelves.
