When Sir John Eliot Gardiner was in Paris last May to conduct a concert at the Poissy Theater, he agreed to an interview with Goldberg. Gardiner is one of the most influential and unusual conductors on the international scene today. He has guest-conducted numerous prestigious orchestras in Europe and the United States, and is responsible for orchestras, operas and festivals the world over. John Eliot Gardiner has been the recipient of many awards for his crowning achievements. His vast repertoire is illustrated by the more than one hundred and fifty recordings made for Philips Classics and Deutsche Grammophon, among other companies. Gardiner has always been guided by the highest standards. The result is a precise and painstaking conducting style that answers to his demand for musical clarity and fidelity to the composer’s intentions. Gardiner has been deeply involved in the early music revival and Baroque aesthetics from the outset of his career. Gradually his repertoire has widened to include works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These multiple perspectives converge in his desire to immerse himself in the spirit of the music and bring new life to every score. The Monteverdi Choir, which he founded in 1964, the English Baroque Soloists, founded in 1977, and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, founded in 1990, all bear witness to his vitality and lively imagination. These ensembles exemplify Gardiner’s wide-ranging tastes and areas of specialization. His career as a conductor has taken him through a variety of styles and repertoires whose common denominator is spirit and sensitivity. One of the goals of our conversation was to identify the origins, the musical well-springs, that influenced Gardiner from the beginning. Other objectives were to define a complex personality who seeks perfection in every endeavour, to comprehend a conductor who knows how to communicate his enthusiasm, and to understand the man whose culture and intuition lead him to the very heart of the music he performs. “The best part of music isn’t written in the notes,” as Bruno Walter said of Gustav Mahler’s conducting. Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s interpretations can be described in the same way, as true re-creations.
