10 CDS FOR A DESERT ISLAND: MAGDALENA KOZENA
Magdalena Kozena
The mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená, a native of Brno in the Czech Republic, discovered the power of song as a young girl. She studied at the University of the Performing Arts in Bratislava, and won many prizes in the Czech Republic and other countries. After a highly successful debut at Brno's Janácek Theatre, her triumphs continued in the Vienna Volksoper and other major venues. Her roles in works by Mozart, Gluck, Monteverdi and Handel have included Paris, Idamante, Nero, Sesto and Cherubino. Her recent performance in Paris, on the occasion of the centenary of the Pélleas et Mélisande première, recreated Mélisande's ardor and mysterious melancholy. Her immediate plans include summer appearances in Orange, in Mozart's Requiem, and Salzburg, where she will sing Zerlina in Don Giovanni. Her wide-ranging recordings, made exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon, include works by Bach (Arias and Cantatas), Handel (Messiah, Italian Cantatas, and Dixit Dominus), Rameau (Dardanus) and Gluck (Armide). Other recent releases have explored Czech songs (Dvorák, Janacek and Martinu) and arias by Mozart, Gluck and Myslivecek, three composers linked to Prague. Kozená’s outstandingly clear voice is almost like a physical presence; her beautiful chiaroscuro timbre stretches from luminous highs to shadowy lows. Listening to her pure vocal lines is like a marvelous dream come true. — M.H.
