PHILIP PICKETT
Philip Pickett
By Brian Robins. Pictures by Koldo Chamorro
From a boyhood enthusiasm for the trumpet, conductor and recorder player Philip Pickett developed into one of Britain’s most innovative early music practitioners. Particularly renowned for his imaginative and often spectacular theatrical recreations of medieval and Renaissance ‘events’, over a period of nearly thirty years Pickett has constantly devoted re-search and thought to new and challenging ways in which to present early music to audiences. Brian Robins went on behalf of Goldberg to meet Philip Pickett at his south London home just after he had returned from France, where he had conducted the Nancy orchestra in an unlikely (for him) sounding programme that included Mozart’s G minor Symphony and a contemporary avant-garde work that in view of Pickett’s comments had best remain nameless. The discourse that ensued was lively and stimulating, the conductor’s formidable intellectual and at times controversial arguments well garnished with a sharp sense of humour and outspoken comments, some of which sadly must remain off the record.
