TESS KNIGHTON: PORTRAIT OF A MUSICOLOGIST
Tess: Portrait of a musicologist Knighton
By Brian Robins.
Doctor Tess Knighton is a musicologist. To the layman it’s a label liable to conjure up instant images of dusty libraries and faded manuscripts diligently pored over by ivory-tower dwellers scarcely less dusty and faded.

It would be difficult to imagine anyone less suited to such a description than Tess Knighton. For a start she is young, amiable, and, once warmed to any of the wide range of topics relating to early music that interest her, exudes an infectious vitality that catches her listener’s unwavering attention.

But Knighton is more than just a musicologist. Since 1992 she has also been editor of Oxford University Press’s Early Music, the magazine founded by John Thomson and today without question the world’s most prestigious and influential academic journal in the field.

It was to Early Music’s offices, just off London’s Baker Street, that I went to meet Knighton on a dreary December day shortly before Christmas.
