Marta Almajano
By Ernesto Schmied. Pictures by Koldo Chamorro. Translated by Yolanda Acker
A kind and good-natured woman who confesses to singing in the shower, Marta Al-majano (born Zaragoza, Spain, 1965) is always disposed to a pleasant chat.

She is today one of the most captivating voices in the early music world. Ernesto Schmied spoke to her last November at her Zaragoza home.

Over a cup of tea, at her home in Zaragoza, Marta Almajano told me, among other things, that she loves literature and Mediterranean cooking. We were surrounded by many antique pieces of furniture, most of which were family heirlooms restored by a friend.

On one of the living-room walls there was a particularly eye-catching painting: as I drew nearer, I could see the image of a saint made out of small pieces of straw, which were cut with an almost obsessive meticulousness. One of her relatives made it a long time ago, and Marta had rescued it from the dust.
