| In the late years of the fifteenth-century the Spanish viols that developed from Moorish antecedents arrived in Italy with the Spanish popes of the Borgia family. At that time many treble or alto instruments, such as recorders, shawms and violins, were developed in lower pitched sizes and the family of instruments that evolved from the modest sized Spanish viol added tenor and bass as well. Rediscovering music appropriate to this family of viols is of great interest today because of the revival of the instruments and their performance technique. Most important is the emergence of accomplished players who are capable of rising to the necessary artistic standards. |
