In the ironic words of Piron, “All of (Rameau’s) soul and mind were in his harpsichord; when he closed the instrument, there was no one at home”.
It would be difficult to express better Rameau’s attachment to the instrument for which he wrote the largest part of his instrumental music.
It is paradoxical, however, that the quantity of his music for harpsichord is relatively small, although it was written over a period of forty years.
Rameau, a ceaseless innovator, made use of all the expressive possibilities of the instrument, as well as using it as inspiration for his operas. |
