field is Goldberg"The Washington Post
The cover of this issue is a portrait of Dorothea Sophia Thiele, the wife of the painter Johann Alexander Thiele, painted by the German artist Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779).
Mengs’ paintings are characterised by equilibrium and classical composition. He worked as a court painter in Dresden from 1745 and in 1752 moved to Rome to complete his training in the classical field.
Mengs was one of the first neoclassical painters, a movement he represented in an admirable manner during his period of splendour at the court of Charles III of Spain, where he helped to bring about a change in European art.
From the beginning of his career, Mengs stood out as a great portrait artist, this image of Dorothea Sophia Thiele, painted in 1744, belonging to his early period.
