Concerto Soave

Maria Cristina Kiehr

Harmonia Mundi HMC 901698
1999 - 71:47 min.

Maria Cristina Kiehr's name occurred on records frequently a few years ago. She was always a dependable member of any ensemble that she sang with. The result of her consistent good work is her emergence as a solo artist. This new program follows a Monteverdi disc with the same ensemble. As before, she concentrates her efforts on the music of the early baroque era, in this case the less familiar composers and works. This program gives her more prominence than ever before.

The composers and works are mostly obscure. The most familiar selections are the Frescobaldi pieces. Dove, sparir was recorded by René Jacobs (on one of his earliest discs) and Max van Egmond. Maddalena alla croce was recorded by van Egmond and Roberto Gini. Ensemble La Fenice recorded Lagrime amare, one of Domenico Mazzocchi's three pieces. The two largest works are Luigi Rossi's Pianto della Maddalena and Benedetto Ferrari's Queste pungenti spine (the latter also recorded by René Jacobs). Four tracks are devoted to contrasting instrumental pieces, but the disc belongs to Kiehr.

Kiehr is sympathetic to these 17th-century solo works from the Roman school, several of them laments of Mary Magdalen. The Rossi lament in particular is a remarkably moving dramatic scene that should never have waited so long for its first recording. This disc possesses quality out of all proportion to the fame of its composers. JEROME F. WEBER
